Speed Reading Training Platform for Dutch Learners
An online speed reading platform that helps Dutch-speaking learners improve reading speed and comprehension through structured exercises, real-time performance tracking, and gamified progression - from beginner to advanced reader.
About the Project
Snellie is a speed reading training platform built for the Dutch education market, targeting students, professionals, and lifelong learners who want to read faster without sacrificing comprehension. The founder identified that Dutch-language speed reading courses were almost exclusively delivered in-person or through static PDF workbooks - expensive, inconvenient, and impossible to track progress objectively. International speed reading apps existed but none supported Dutch-language content or the specific methodology the founder had developed through years of teaching. Snellie digitizes the founder's proven speed reading methodology into a structured online platform with progressive exercises, real-time words-per-minute tracking, comprehension checks after each session, and gamified progression that keeps learners motivated through the full training program.
The Challenge
Technical challenges
Building a text rendering engine with precise word-per-minute pacing controls, real-time speed calculation during reading exercises, and automated comprehension scoring. The platform also needed subscription management with Stripe, progress persistence across sessions, and a content management system for the founder to add new exercises and reading materials.
Product & UX challenges
Translating a hands-on, instructor-led speed reading methodology into a self-paced digital experience. The platform needed to feel like a training program - not a generic reading app. Exercises had to be timed precisely, reading speed had to be measured accurately in real time, and comprehension testing had to prevent learners from speed-reading without understanding.
Business challenges
No Dutch-language speed reading platform existed online. The founder's in-person courses had proven demand but were limited by physical attendance and scheduling. International speed reading apps did not support Dutch content or the founder's specific teaching methodology - creating an opportunity for a localized digital product.

Work Process
1
Discovery & methodology mapping
Worked with the founder to map the complete speed reading methodology - exercise types, progression logic, pacing techniques, and comprehension testing approach. Defined how each element would translate from in-person instruction to a self-paced digital experience.
2
UX/UI design
Designed the training interface with focus on the reading experience itself - minimal distractions during exercises, clear speed indicators, immediate comprehension feedback, and satisfying progression mechanics that keep learners motivated through the multi-week program.
3
Platform development
Built the speed reading engine with precise text pacing, real-time WPM calculation, comprehension scoring, and progress tracking. Integrated Stripe for subscriptions and developed the content CMS so the founder could manage all exercises and materials independently.
4
Content migration & launch
Migrated the founder's existing course content into the platform, tested exercise timing and difficulty calibration with beta learners, and launched to the Dutch market with the founder's existing student email list as the initial user base.
