Social Trip Planning & Sharing Platform for UK Travelers
A travel planning app that combines social trip inspiration with collaborative itinerary management - helping UK travelers discover destinations through real traveler experiences, build detailed itineraries, and coordinate group trips in one place.
About the Project
Trippn is a social travel platform built for UK travelers who wanted a better way to plan trips by learning from real people - not review sites, travel agents, or influencer ads. The founder observed that trip planning was fragmented across multiple tools and sources: Instagram for inspiration, Google Maps for locations, spreadsheets for budgets, WhatsApp groups for coordination, and TripAdvisor for reviews. The experience was scattered, and the best information - real recommendations from travelers who had actually been there - was buried in social media posts and group chats. Trippn consolidates the entire travel planning experience: discover destinations through authentic traveler posts and itineraries, build your own trip plan with day-by-day scheduling and budget tracking, invite friends to collaborate on shared itineraries, and save everything in one place for offline access during the trip.
The Challenge
Technical challenges
Building collaborative itinerary editing where multiple group members can modify the same trip plan simultaneously. Integrating Google Maps for location-based discovery and itinerary mapping. Supporting offline access for travelers who need their itinerary in areas with poor connectivity.
Product & UX challenges
Balancing two distinct modes in one app: social browsing (discovering destinations and reading travel experiences) and practical planning (building day-by-day itineraries with logistics and budgets). Users needed to flow naturally between inspiration and action without the app feeling cluttered or trying to do too much.
Business challenges
Trip planning was spread across 5+ tools for most travelers - no single platform combined social inspiration with practical planning. Travel review sites felt impersonal and SEO-optimized rather than authentic. The platform needed to solve the cold-start problem by making it easy for early users to contribute content that would attract more travelers.

Work Process
1
Discovery & user research
Conducted research with UK travelers to map the complete trip planning journey - from initial inspiration through destination research, itinerary building, group coordination, and on-trip usage. Identified the specific tool-switching pain points and defined which features would deliver the most value in an MVP.
2
UX/UI design
Designed two seamlessly connected experiences: a social discovery feed that inspires and informs, and a practical planning workspace that turns inspiration into actionable itineraries. The key design challenge was making the transition between "dreaming" and "planning" feel natural and motivating.
3
Cross-platform development
Built for web and mobile with React.js and React Native, integrating Google Maps for location services, building the collaborative editing engine for shared itineraries, and implementing offline data synchronization for on-trip usage without connectivity.
4
Testing & launch
Tested collaborative editing with concurrent users, validated offline sync reliability, tested the social-to-planning user flow with real travelers, and launched to the UK market with an initial community of travel enthusiasts.
